Today's Learning Goals:

To familiarize students with the expectations of the course and with each other.

SL.9-10.1: Initiate and participate in a range of collaborative discussions, building on each other’s ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
RI.9-10.1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Equity Cards

Today we are going to create Equity Cards. Mrs. Weber and I will use these to call on you randomly throughout the year. One one side of your notecard, write your first and last name. On the other side of your card, evaluate your abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Give yourself a lower score if you are not as confident (lowest being 1) and a higher score if you are very confident (highest being 10). Write a justification statement for each area to give me some information about why you gave yourself this score.

Course Syllabus

Let's examine the syllabus a bit with our classmates.

Talking Partners

Rather than reading the syllabus out to you, we are going to review the document together, analyzing it in pairs.

Make sure to keep your talking partners sheet in an easily accessible place in your binder, as we will be referring back to it throughout the unit.

Word of the Day: Metacognition

  • Why is metacognition important? How can it help us?
  • What was different about reviewing the syllabus this way instead of in a lecture?
  • Which way works best for you?
  • Are there any downsides to looking at the syllabus this way instead of in a teacher lecture?
